A local's guide to Queen's Wharf and the riverfront

Queen's Wharf turned four hectares of Brisbane riverfront from a government car park into the city's newest dining, gaming and public space precinct, and our building sits in the middle of it. Guests keep asking the same question at check-in: where do we start?

This is the answer we give, minus the brochure talk. What is actually worth your time, what the locals use and what can wait for a second trip.

Start with the Sky Deck, work down

The Sky Deck on level 21 is the precinct's best free hour. The view runs from the Story Bridge to the ranges, the drink prices are hotel-normal rather than attraction-inflated, and the sunset window explains the whole precinct in a single look. Book a 4 pm slot in summer, 3 pm in winter, and you watch the city switch from work mode to evening. Below it, the promenade runs about a kilometre of river-facing path where the ferry terminals, pop-up bars and the Neville Bonner Bridge all connect. Weekday mornings it is joggers and cyclists; Friday evenings it is the whole city.

What locals actually use

The precinct runs deeper than the headline attractions. The heritage buildings on William Street hold the quieter restaurants, the ferry terminals at the water's edge connect you to South Bank and New Farm without touching a road, and the laneways between George and William Streets hide the coffee the desk staff actually drink.

Five stops worth the walk

  • The Sky Deck at golden hour, booked the day before
  • The promenade ferry to South Bank for lunch
  • Commissariat Store Museum for the city history in 40 minutes
  • The Neville Bonner Bridge at night for the light display
  • Sunday farmers' market on the plaza, 7 am start

Making a day of it

A workable day runs: coffee on George Street, the museum, a promenade walk to the ferry, lunch at South Bank, back over the bridge, Sky Deck for sunset, dinner in the precinct. That is eight hours, most of it outdoors, and nothing over a ten-minute walk from the next thing.

The concierge desk keeps the day's event schedule if something on the plaza has bumped the usual rhythm. Ask before you leave the lobby.

Quick Answers

Entry is free with a timed booking, which you can make same-day at quiet times. Food and drinks are priced like the hotel bars, not like an observation tower.

River end to street end is about fifteen minutes at a stroll. Add the promenade loop and it becomes a comfortable hour.

Stay in the middle of it

The precinct is downstairs. The rooms are upstairs. Book the one with the view.
